Daily Film Descriptions for Fancy

Month One

We picked Fancy up from my Grandparents, who raised her, she was friendly on her terms but not sure of being caught! We also showed the tools we would be using in the first month of training, including different ways to make a solid place to tie.
We showed tricks to catching Fancy, explained our natural bubble. We worked her with the rope while she is loose and showed how to put on the squeeze halter rope then worked her some with the flag.
Continued with the rope & flag in her stall, getting her to stand better and not be on top of me. Showed how to put the squeeze halter rope on again, good visual point.
Started with the squeeze halter, progressed to the rope treatment, including picking up her feet for the first time. Started asking her to move off us by asking, some flag work then we took her down the alley to let her play in the indoor arena.
Continued with rope treatment, flag and added twirling the rope and in return get her to soften in her turns, and getting her used to the flag over her face.
We took Fancy out to the small round corral for the first time today. But before that we showed how to get them used to the cinch by pulling the rope around her belly, she wasn’t real impressed!
We headed straight for the round corral today, worked her with the flag, she had a lot better focus today. Showed the difference between standing still while the flag is moving and moving when the flag is moving. We then started teaching her to change directions while working with the flag and started putting the flag behind me to teach her to not push into me. Then we showed the bare basics of leading and positioning.
We realized we didn’ t talk about how we clean her stall! So we showed how to keep from panicking a scared horse and how to keep you and your horse safe with a cart in the stall. Then we headed off to the small round corral for another day of learning! We took our flag work to a higher level, adding speed and height. We really explain getting them to look at us, leading and positioning from the left side, explaining our natural bubble and discussed about nipping and what to do about it.
We explain the differences about a sensitive horse, then go into flag work, higher and faster, working her back and forth, getting more fluid forward motion. We also continued her leading and positioning on the left side, holding her feet with our hands and started to pat her, which is quite funny!
No volume today, sorry! We showed how we can now start asking her to step away from us, then we started with leading and position then some flag work then crossed to the other side to teach leading and positioning from the right side. Started picking up her feet with our hands.
Put a rope halter on her and showed the best way to halter one and how to tie a rope halter. 1st day in indoor arena continued work with leading and positioning from the left while including how to keep her off of us and being able to pet her as we walk. Also covered moving away from us and backing. Then back to the right side to master coming with us.
Rope treatment in her stall to start us off then to the indoor arena to work on flagging for focus and getting her to bend but not run threw the shoulder. Fancy is getting much better with the flag whipping around but she did struggle with the focus! Patted her more and rubbed her all over, her buddies did show up and she lost control of herself at the end but we show how to bring her back. Picked up all her feet at the end.
We start with a touch of liberty work in her stall, and then trimmed her for the first time. We also flagged Fancy off horseback for the first time. I show how it relates to when I am on the ground.
Bad video, sorry. Have some questions we answered, did some more liberty work and continued with our flagging off horseback.
Our last day of flagging off of Tonto, including starting to teach them to pony, then continued to work on leading and getting her to trot beside us. We also show how we sometimes give grain as we groom and work with the feet.
We take Fancy into the little round corral and start teaching her to lunge. She tried to duck back some but we showed how to work with it. Did some more leading from the right working on keeping her away from us. Introduced flay spray and took her feet forward.
Stared out with leading on the right then went into lunging. Also showed the humble hobble and how to use it to walk behind on a potentially kicky horse. Introduced a stable sheet to her too.
Really worked on getting a good back, showing the different ways to get it. Then lunged again and more fly spray, humble hobble and put the stable sheet on her, showing some tips about the leg straps.
Stared with some liberty in her stall, showed how to do the squeeze halter again. Sacked her out with her blanket then lunged her with it on in the indoor arena for her first time. Then more sack out with her blanket, including walking over it. Then her first time being tied, then how to help them with liberty in her stall.
We started with sacking out with the sheet then off to the indoor arena to lunge. She wanted to reverse a couple of times but we showed how to address it. Then recap all she has learned in her first month.
Day one part one of working a wild one at the 2010 Western States Wild horse and Burro Expo in Reno Nevada. Kitty worked this horse 3 consecutive days.

Showing rubber reins and tie her to the hitching post for the first time.
Rubber reins again and tied her head around to her tail.
Saddle cold turkey, rubber reins, tying around to her tail & recapping some groundwork.
Recapping what we have already taught. We do focus on our turns and stop with our bridle reins.

Month Three

Did a full trim to get her ready for boots & riding!
Fitted boots; lunging, saddling, rubber reins & tying to her tail. Showed how to tie a halter rope around the neck like the Calvary did.
Mic problems, problems with lunging to the left. Flag on her back.
Carried the flag again and she was much better today.
In the outdoor arena lunging & driving her for the first time, even stepped up on the pedestal!
Put the flag back on Fancy & did some lunging & driving, she did some spooking in the wind as we drove her around outside.
Showed how to get them started in ponying.
Finely!!! The day of the first ride is here!! Showed how to shorten an off billet & where to stand so you do not get kicked.
Fancy's second ride, including trotting.
Fancy's third ride, including lope & what to look for.
Fancy’ s fourth ride, working on turns at walk.
Turns at walk and trot, lots of explaining.
Turns, including a lope.
Got away from Kitty and kicked out!
Drilled her a little on being quicker and more responsive.
Recapped our work from yesterday, rode her, working on our turns, etc.
Issue at the lope under rider, tried to take out cameraman!
Used a nose band, explained it & a neat trick with our lunge line.
Worked on turns, getting better.
Riding outside & in the big arena. Showing how we only use one rein at a time to turn & Fancy likes to show off!

Month Four

Today we took Fancy out on her first ride in the hills! She did great!
We took Fancy out for her 2nd ride in the hills and Rick followed us in the mini truck. It was an interesting time!! We also addressed stopping with pull instead of just whoa so you can get your horse to stop or slow down when you pull.
Today we worked on stops and rollbacks with Fancy before we headed out into the hills. Once in the hills we showed how to get them sacked out to brush and let Fancy do some leading.
Fancy has swelling behind her jaw so we opted to give her a few days to see if it will clear up or if a vet will be called. Today we address getting her feet trimmed up and her face and bridle path clipped up!
With Fancy down we wanted to continue working on the same things so we got Larry and his horse out so we could show someone else working on the same things. We cover our basic turns and start our stops today, mainly at a walk.
Today we continue our work with Larry on his horse. Getting a little quicker on getting a response. Larry started really getting his horse to free up and back today, speed will come but he is starting to learn to actually move backwards on his own instead of being pulled backwards!
Today we were in the outdoor arena again, continuing with the turns and stops. Started getting some decent backs with a bit of speed, not fast mind you but better than slow motion!
Today we head into the indoor arena to work with Larry and his gelding. We continue with the turns and stops, then include in the start of our rollbacks. Great lesson, Larry really started to get a feel for it and Cush really started to respond!
Today we picked up the pace to a lope and continued to work on stops and backs.
Today we pushed Cush a little harder and started getting some really clean rollbacks and good stops. Larry had to learn how to use his rope as a swatter and get his body to be a little more positive.
Today we continued after a day off on our turns, stops and show why we need to drop our body, not brace our feet in our stops.
Today we headed to the outdoor arena and started putting all the stuff we had learned to use, including turns at a canter.
We continued with putting stuff together and worked on getting it better! Also show Fancy and heading into the vet, she is ok and we will be back on her next week!
Today I asked Larry if he minded me working Cush instead. He didn't have a problem with it so I did some groundwork with him then rode him. I tried to show the differences in what I did versus what Larry did so that he and Cush could both learn!
Today we are back on Fancy after about a 2-week break with her swollen jaw line. The vet said she should be fine so to go back to working her! We recapped some of our groundwork in her pen to get her focus then saddled her up and headed into the outdoor arena were we lunged her some then rode her. We reminded her of all she had learned and started getting her lined out once again.
Today we worked again on Fancy's turns and stops. We had some mic issues so I had to voice over the best I could, sorry about that but I think we got if fixed!
I was sick yesterday so we missed working Fancy but today we recapped some turns, did some good rollbacks and stops! Fancy finished with taking a trail ride out with the kids! We will be gone hunting the next few days so we will have to finish up month 4 when we get back! Have a great weekend!
Today we brought Fancy out after 6 days off and she was quite spry!! She attempted to buck around on the lunge line and I showed different things you can do to get her attention back on you. We never let a horse learn to play on the lunge line, if that is ok, so is playing as we ride them! We then worked on straight lines.
We continued our work on straight lines today, showing how our turns help us achieve straight lines. Fancy did great!
Today we came out and worked Fancy on some leading and positioning then into some circles to get focus before we stepped on. She started out great and then tried to refuse to turn at the lope. Kitty really stuck with her and she finished good!

Month Five

Today we came out with a willing to work Fancy on her turns and straight stretches! She thought about being difficult but listened to us and did as we asked! Kitty talked about bits and the uses of them as she cooled Fancy out.
We began our lesson with circles, then went into our straight lines and showed how to stop them if they are charging or wanting to go to fast, which is the start to getting them to back off or rate. Fancy got better all the way around!
We showed how to use a set of draw reins and the benefits and negatives to using them. Fancy did good!
Bambi worked on Fancy this morning so we showed some stretching exercises, how to worm her and we trimmed her feet.
Today we started out by showing the bit we use then continue with circles and straight stretches. We then introduce the flag to her again and finished with working the flag off of her back, teaching her how to handle pressure from a different position but with pressure she understood.
Today we used a different snaffle and discuss the reasons for it. We continue with our circles and straight stretches as well as work with our flag again.
We started today out with a trail ride to warm up Fancy then we started our first day of collection with shoulder control. I tried to really explain the reasons for collection and how it will help in the long run.
Today we continued with the collection after a hill ride. Collection can be hard for both horse and rider, so I try to explain as much as I can, different angle to today, we will see if it is any better.
I was sick for the last week so we couldn’t work Fancy until today. We brought her out, warmed her up and got her started again on her collection in the indoor arena.
We showed how to start teaching your horse to do a forehand turn from the ground then went into more collection. Fancy did good today and will soon be ready to speed up!
Today we showed our forehand turn again and did it on her back as well. We continued with collection, speeding up to our trot.
We continued our work on our collection at a walk and trot. We worked on our forehand turn again and then showed how to cue from the ground for a haunch turn.
Today we worked on our collection and got Fancy to do a haunch turn from on her back.
Fancy did some great haunch turns today and we started working on our counter bends and counter circles. Lots of explaining to help it all make sense!
We brought Fancy out after a day off and she did really well. She is starting to realize that we are getting ready for her job so she is focusing quicker than she used too. We worked on collection again; counter bends and turns, haunch and forehand turns as well as addressing how to learn to tell which foot is moving when.
Today we continued on our collection, speeding up the trot some and got good haunch and forehand turns. Started showing how we go into our spin, getting the correct body form.
We took Fancy into town today to play a skit for the kids at the school! Very fun and showed how all our training made for a fun day and a great time all the way around!
Today we continued with our collection, and change our counter bend into a correct bend while keeping our shoulder control. We show how the counter bends help with our correct circles.
We started right off with our correct bend collection and sped up to a canter. Then showed how to side pass and started our correct reining spins. Great lesson, really starting to come together!
Can you believe we are at the last day of month 5! And what fun we have had! Fancy shows again today that she has learned to be soft in the face, to move her body when asked and side pass with ease!

Month Six

Today we worked on collection and used our newly learned shoulder control to get Fancy next to the walls so we could make noise on them! Soon we will be ready for gates! We also covered some more side passing.
Today we set up some cones and worked on our shoulder control in moving Fancy over instead of just turning her. I really tried to explain how to move each part of her body, to move out away from the turn and to move into the turn.
Today a good friend, trainer and showman Mike Horrigan joins us. Mike has trained and shown horses on the National level in both AQHA and APHA shows. He has trained for both pleasure and reining. I asked him to ride Fancy and show you what he has been showing me! I love to learn and this is a great guy to learn from! My granddad died at almost 94 and he said he was still learning! I pray I never think I know so much that I stop learning!
We showed how to get a horse to stand next to a pedestal to mount, and then continued with our collection, counter bends and side passes.
Today we showed how to open a gate!! Josie also rode Fancy around to show off!
We stared today with showing how to use a bucket for a mounting block and how to get our horse to stand still for it. We continued with our collection and the softening of her face, then worked on the gate again.
Bambi worked on Fancy yesterday so today we showed some work with our Best Vet, talked about the fact that Fancy was growing! We also trimmed up her mane and tail for the winter and talked about rain rot and scratches.
We showed what we are using saddle pad wise and why then continued with our mounting bucket, collection and a few more fun tricks!
Today we stated that we would be working on Fancy’s collection before we start videoing so we can show you more stuff! We did show how to get the start to a reining stop and back using the fence then went into backing through obstacles. Hope it isn’t too boring but training can be like watching grass grow!
We worked Fancy prior to videoing on her collection. Then we went into some backing in a square and started two tracking along the fence in preparation to teaching her to moving her hip in as we drive forward.
Today we continued with our two tracking along the wall, getting her to start bringing her head toward the way we were traveling. We also worked on our transition from a collected walk into a collected trot.
Fancy had a couple of days off so we had to work on getting her focus again. Then we continued with our warm up of collection and then into our two track with her face and body going the same way.
Today we warmed up with groundwork and collection then went into getting her to move her hip in with her face bent by using the wall then progressed to moving her hip in on the straight stretches. Fancy did great! It is really starting to come together!
Today we showed again how to get our horse up next to the fence to get on. Then we went into our collection and added asking Fancy to bring her hip in as we worked around the arena. We also showed how to get her to push her hip all the way around into a forehand turn with her head still tucked toward her hip.
We worked on collection, counter bends, hip in and proceeded into the trot. Fancy is doing well but it takes time to teach them to do each of these maneuvers, so be patient!
Today we worked on taking Fancy into a counter bend circle at a trot. It is a great practice before we go into a canter, then we can do counter canter circles which is necessary for good crisp flying lead changes.
We covered all the things we have already been working on and sped it up to a canter. The faster we go the harder it is for both the rider and the horse, so have patience!
We really worked on getting our soft face before asking her to push her hip in. Fancy was much better today and was even better at the lope too.
Today we continued our work with all the things we have taught Fancy and worked on her at the canter again. She was good one way then really fought us on the opposite side. Remember that it takes time to teach the technical stuff and many horses will resist the harder work, we just have to remain solid and consistent so they learn to work with us instead of against us!
Today we took Fancy out on her last ride in Month 6 into the hills with the snow! She did great and I hope you don’t get dizzy from the helmet cam!! See ya next month!

Month Seven

After 2 months vacation we brought Fancy out from the field! We trimmed her feet with a grinder, yes, a grinder!! Don't try this at home! The video was a little dark so hard to see, sorry about that, we will get back into the swing of things again! Fancy was fantastic, she was great with her feet, and we clipped up her bridle path and face to get her ready to show off for you!
Today we rode Fancy for the first time after her 2-month break. We lunged her first and she was great! We talked about making sure we have focus so that we stay safe and the horse knows their job. We did have some mic issues but did some voice over.
Today we find ourselves in Albany, Oregon for a mounted shoot competition. I took Fancy for the exposure and experience. We show lunging her in a new place, the stall, scary places to lead over and how to handle it.
We are still at the shoot but today we had time to ride Fancy in the warm up arena as well as around the other horses during the competition. Chaos and commotion can be scary for a green horse but with the right skills your horse can handle it too!
We are back from the shoot, what a great time we had! Great experience for Fancy as well! Today we cover some different things including backing, that will help us in our trail riding, especially for extreme trail.
We had some friends and clients out for a lesson and included it with Fancy’s lesson. We worked on some obstacles in the arena then Fancy’s first water crossing!
Today we show blanketing Fancy after I rode her some in the arena but we mainly talk about things to look for in shoeing and why. We show a mare that was poorly shod and what to look for and how to keep you horse sound in the feet.
We had a group lesson today and worked on walking and trotting over poles as well as backing through poles.
We are taking Fancy out in the hills before our videos so the videos may get shorter but they will be full of information! Today we continued working on backing through poles, making them closer.
We headed out to the hills showing how to back up hills and to get your horse to go down a “slide” into water! Some great hill footage!
Worked on backing through an “L” including side passing around the “L” too.
We worked on backing over poles in the arena, giving our horse confidence to trust us anytime and to think instead of react.
Today we had our lesson again and unfortunately we had some mic issues. I am normally loud so you can hear me most of the time. We worked on backing over logs then back onto the bridge!
We worked on our backing over the bridge again, included the start to neck reining and showed how to tie up her tail.
Today we worked Fancy with a flag and a whip off her back. We also recapped some technicals that we haven’t done in a while and continued with our neck reining work.
We continued our technicals, working with the flag and whip, then introduced the roping rope.
Fancy didn’t want to be very soft and responsive today so we worked on some collection and also on her handling the whip. She wanted to toss her head so we put her to work showing her how to handle the pressure of the whip. We also got our first official bow! I think we were all surprised at how easy it was! Doesn’t mean she knows how to do it yet but it is a good start!
Shontae joined us for a lesson today and we worked on our stops and backing through and around 3 cones. It was a great day for learning! Our tape ran out on us but we still had a long lesson!
Today we used Fancy to flag a green colt! She did really good! Flagging is a great training aid whether it is for the flagged colt or the flagging saddle horse!
We are at our last day of month 7! We finished up with flagging Ramos again and took a bow!

Wild One

Today we show the wild guy arriving and then we go into his first day with the bamboo pole. He is a nice guy, just scared and not sure what to do with himself.
The wild one was quieter today. He allowed us to put the pole all over his body, down all his legs, under his belly and under his neck from both sides.
Today we spent quite a bit of time with the wild guy. He was much quieter doing the pole work, letting us put the pole all over him on both sides with very little movement. We then continued with the rope and he wasn’t to sure about that! It was a little exciting for a minute but he settled back down and we got him to sniff us several times and he was responding to the pressure of the rope on his neck.
The wild one was totally fine with the pole today and only panicked once with the rope. We did rig up a rope halter on him (which many people ask us how we do it!!) and worked on him not leaving when he wanted to. He is a smart horse and had already decided that we couldn’t tell him what to do so we had some issues working him around and getting him to give to the halter. He soon let us scratch him and move forward a bit when pressure was applied.
Well our Wild One has a name!!! Buckshot!! His owner got to come see him this weekend and come up with his name! Well Buckshot did great today, even after a few days off. We started as we always do with the bamboo pole and he was fine with it then we used it to move him around. He didn’t like that idea anymore than he did the flag trying to tell him what to do the last time! He did try to kick out but remember that is what they do to keep themselves safe. He wasn’t trying to be bad, he was just trying to tell me to leave him alone. Well that didn’t work so the next plan, going when I asked did. He showed how smart he was and how not afraid he was too! I do like this guy!
Buckshot did great today! He let us put a rope on him quickly, still with the pole but he was in our face and loved to be petted today! Huge progress! We put a halter and drag rope on him for a few days.
Today we continued our work with the halter and flag. Buckshot is definitely not afraid of the flag, which is both good and bad! Good because he shows he isn’t a spooky horse but bad because we can’t use it as a guide if he doesn’t want to move away from it.
Today we worked Buckshot in his pen then took him out to the little round corral. He is starting to lead, but doesn’t fully comprehend it yet! We worked on the start of lunging and keeping his side to us instead of his face.
We started out in Buckshot’s pen with our rope work then used a rubber curry on him then headed out to the round corral. We had to try several different things before we could finely get Buckshot to move around us like lunging instead of trying to come over the top of us! That is a problem when they don’t fear you, they don’t worry about going through you! He finished really good and I think he is really smart! Almost too smart!
We were going to head to the round corral today but Buckshot decided he needed work on his leading to the round corral and not running away or spinning around. I think it was a great day for Buckshot! He tested every avenue and finally had to decide I wasn’t going to give in! Great lesson!
We started out in Buckshot’s pen, then worked on leading him into the round corral a couple of times then took him out into the indoor arena and worked him off of Tonto, our flagging horse. It was a good lesson for Buckshot and something I love to do with all my young horses!
We flagged Buckshot again today and he was much better! We also tied him for the first time!
We worked Buckshot from Tonto again and got him to start ponying with us. Then we showed tying up and brushing safely while tied.
We continued to work Buckshot off Tonto. He is getting better each day.
Today Buckshot’s owners were able to come see him! We worked him off Tonto, did some ground work then his owners were able to come up and pet him for the first time! Then we turned him loose to play for a while.
We ponied off Tonto today, working on getting Buckshot to come with us fluidly. Which will help tremendously as we go into lunging. Did some more ground work too.
Today we really got Buckshot to move with us and yet to stay back were he belongs. He pushed us just enough at one point that Tonto and I went down. We finished up with tying and brushing with a currycomb.
We lunged Buckshot for the first time today. He did very well and we also did our official rope treatment to him and got him to give his feet to the pressure.
Today we worked Buckshot on the lunge line again. He did really well, we picked up his feet with the rope and introduced him to a blanket. He is sure on his way to being a nice horse!
We lunged Buckshot again and sacked him out some more with the blanket and put it on him. He gave us a little problem with picking up his back foot but he finished great! Quite comical with his blanket too!
We worked with Buckshot and his blanket for a bit then ponied him around off Tonto then headed out to the hills! He was excited to say the least but he did great!
We ponied Buckshot out again today and got the Ipod to work!! So you can see how good he did, hope you don’t get seasick! We then came back and worked on our rope treatment, picking up feet and putting on our blanket again.
We worked on our lunging and picking up feet. Buckshot had a couple of days off so he was feeling pretty frisky! We also worked on our leading and positioning as well as rope treatment and picking up his feet.
Today we lunged Buckshot again and worked on our leading and positioning some more as well as using the humble hobble to get him to keep his feet up. He did great! Nice guy!
Buckshot came out a quieter boy today! 3 days in a row of hard work tend to get a horse to focus! He did great lunging and we tied up his front feet again and he did fantastic! We also worked on him turning with the rope behind his hip.
We took Buckshot out into the outdoor arena today and worked on lunging and some obstacles. He did great! Then we turned him loose to let him enjoy the freedom and we will see how he is to catch back up!
We worked Buckshot again in the outdoor arena. He wanted to play today instead of work so he got mad at us and acted like a little kid not getting his way! We worked him through it and he finely got over his fit!
We apologize but we had our computer crash over two weeks ago and we have just gotten it back and are now in the process of getting all our files off of Carbinite. It says it will take several days! We are also trying to get all the programs we had on our computer put back on but we are still missing a couple of things so we are unable to finish up month 8 and the wild one until we can get everything back into working order.
Ace was gentled by us a couple of months ago, then has been out being "wild and free" again in the pasture, until 3 days ago we brought him back in for a trim and a "tune up" on what he learned when he first came. He is a super sweet boy!

Month Eight

Today I had our lessons here and we worked on our backing around barrels.
We are getting closer to the “Americas Favorite Horse” tryouts! We worked on our back, some with the rope and worked on crisp stops at the trot. We also bowed Fancy while on her!!
I worked Fancy in the outdoor arena on our crisp stops over our pole today as well as side passing off the pole and side passing over a barrel! Also covered getting them ready to ride double and sliding off their hips!
We didn’t have a camera operator yesterday so we worked Fancy in the arena with the basic pattern we will have during the “America’s Favorite Trail Horse” auditions. So today we are at the auditions, a friend offered to video so here is what we got on tape!!
Well the auditions were fun but now we are back to work! We show how to pony a yearling today. He is a stud colt so he had a hard time minding his manners a few times but Fancy was great!! We finish up with some neck reining and still working on her bow.
We ponied the colt out before videoing, he was much better today, and then we worked on neck reining, walk and trot using the whip as encouragement. We also worked on our hip in so we can get our lope off on the correct lead and our lead changes down next.
We worked on our hip ins, and progressed into the lope. Fancy really didn’t like the idea of staying collected as I asked her to canter. She will get better, it just takes time!
We had Shontae out today and I helped her with her hip ins and loping off, then also worked with Fancy and hers. She did much better today! I did use a set of draw reins to help her and it made a difference!
We continued with our hip ins and Fancy is getting better, she is starting to understand what is being asked!
More hip ins and we worked on our neck reining some more.
Fancy is really starting to get her correct lope offs, we did some really nice ones today! We also worked on our bow and got her to lay down as well!! Fun day!
We used a running martingale today and explained how it works and how to adjust it. We continued with our collected lope offs and then laid down again.
We worked on our lope offs for the last time for a bit. Showed how Fancy understands what we want and can now give it to us anytime. We also covered how to teach your horse to drag something, Fancy did great!
We headed out into the outdoor arena to work on “barrel” turns. We want to get Fancy to be a shooting horse someday and turns are extremely important for that. We work on our “figure 8” and weaving.
Fancy has also developed a cold with the changing spring weather so we may not get to our videoing the month of May. Much will depend on her health and our computer! Thanks for your understanding and patience!!!!!!!!!
